It’s World War two but nine-year-old Ada has never been allowed to leave their one-room flat because her mother is embarrassed by her daughter’s clubfoot. But when Ada’s younger brother Jamie is evacuated from London, Ada sneaks away to join him. They arrive in a country village and meet Susan Smith who looks after them and helps Ada learn things her mother never would have let her learn, but can Ada and Jamie stay away from their mum forever?
This is a gripping book because you never know what’s going to happen next. It’s very descriptive and whenever I read I always need to read “just one more page.”
There is also a second book called The War I Finally Won which I also highly recommend.
